Marist to Hire Memphis Assistant; Gavin Transfers

As first reported by Mike DeCourcy of Sporting News, Memphis assistant Chuck Martin will be named the new head coach at Marist. Martin was hired at Memphis under John Calipari in 2006 after working as an assistant at St. John's. He was also previously at Manhattan and Drexel. The prior Marist head coach, Matt Brady, left the Red Foxes to coach James Madison.

According to Jeff Goodman of FOXSports.com, Marist freshman guard Jay Gavin is leaving the Red Foxes and transferring to Virginia Commonwealth. Gavin averaged 12.3 points per game this past season, hitting 39 percent of his three-point attempts. Sources tell me that there seemed to be a disconnect between previous head coach Matt Brady and Gavin throughout much of the season.
