Road to Selection Sunday

Happy Selection Sunday, folks. The most important date of the college basketball season is upon us. With about six hours left until the NCAA Tournament is revealed, the Field of 65 is almost filled. If Mississippi State wins the SEC Tournament title later today, bubble teams across the nation will become even more nervous than they already are. The last two or three days of the major conference tournaments have made the teams going to the Big Dance up in the air, especially the last four spots or so.

Here's my breakdown of the tournament as of 12:00 PM:

ACC (5): North Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest, Clemson, Florida State
Big East (7): Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Louisville, Villanova, Syracuse, Marquette, West Virginia
Big Ten (4): Michigan State, Illinois, Purdue, Ohio State
Big 12 (5): Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma State
Pac-10 (5): Washington, UCLA, Arizona State, California, USC
SEC (2): LSU, Tennessee
Atlantic-10 (2): Xavier, Temple
Horizon (2): Butler, Cleveland State
Missouri Valley (1): Northern Iowa
Mountain West (2): Utah, BYU
West Coast (1): Gonzaga

Automatic bids from one-bid leagues: 20

That adds up to 56 teams, leaving 9 spots still open.

The teams likely to receive bids are:
Boston College
Texas A&M
Dayton
Michigan
Wisconsin

Therefore, the teams in the mix for those final four bids are:
Maryland
Minnesota
Penn State
Arizona
San Diego State
Creighton
Saint Mary’s
Auburn
South Carolina
Florida
